Session 1: ‘Be the story’ — why leaders matter in change

Housekeeping

To the team admin: Welcome to workshop 1! You have a very special role to play in your company workshops; you are the leader! In each section of each session, play the videos at the right time, read out and share the text and instructions on screen, lead the activities, and record the outcomes from each. Don’t forget to allocate another team member as timekeeper to keep you on track!

What you need

A whiteboard, 3 flip charts, paper, post-its, break out spaces. For online teams, zoom breakouts and chat can be used in place of rooms and post-its.

How much time it takes

This workshop is designed to be undertaken as 3 separate intensive yet fun sessions, with a min. 20-minute break between each to mentally reset.

Change it up

Know how your team works best and customise the workshop for them. Longer breaks? More discussion? More breakouts. Do it!

Embracing change

35 minutes

In every successful change, people don’t follow a strategy document — they follow leaders.

And in every failed change, it’s rarely the plan that failed — it’s the leadership energy.

This first session is about understanding the role leaders play — not just delivering the what, but shaping the why. The way we show up, the way we talk, the small cues we give — these are what build belief and momentum.

Activity instructions:
  1. Start with a short story: ‘The tale of two changes’ (facilitator or real example — one where change worked because of leadership, one where it didn’t).

  2. Pair reflection (5 mins):

    • Think of a time when you experienced great leadership during change — what did they do?

    • And a time when it failed — what was missing?

  3. Group shares — facilitator captures key themes on a board: ‘What great change leadership looks like’.

  4. Link to Change on a Page — highlight how this connects to leading from the front.

Session 2: Craft your message

Use your words

40 minutes

A s

Leaders need more than belief — they need words.

The way you tell the story of this strategy — in team meetings, hallway conversations, project updates — will shape how your people experience it.

This session is about crafting that story, so each of you leaves ready to communicate in a way that is clear, authentic, and aligned.

Activity instructions:
  • Facilitator presents a ‘bad change story’ — full of jargon, abstract goals, disconnected from people.

  • Group discussion: why does this fall flat? What’s missing?

  • Present key elements of a strong change story:

    • Why this matters (purpose)

    • What’s changing and what’s not

    • How this helps us all succeed

    • The leader’s own belief in it

  • Individual task: draft a 2–3 min ‘elevator story’ about the strategy — for use with their teams.

  • In pairs: practise telling it out loud, get feedback, refine.

Session 3: Moments that matter

Leading in real life

40 minutes

Activity: Power plays

“You can’t train every muscle equally — you have to choose what you’re building for.” Whether it’s power, speed, endurance, or balance, great athletes focus their effort where it will make the biggest difference to their performance.

The same is true here. You’ve now taken stock of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats across People, Planet and Profit. You know where your muscles are strong, where they need more work, and where the gaps lie.

Now it’s time to set your sights: what opportunities can this business lean into — for the greatest positive impact and momentum?

Activity instructions:

Change isn’t led in big speeches — it’s led in the moments that matter: small conversations, decision points, signals we send.

This session is about identifying those moments — and getting intentional about how we use them to build belief and momentum.

  1. Group brainstorm: What are the everyday leadership moments that will shape how people experience this strategy? (facilitator captures — e.g., team meetings, 1:1s, decisions on priorities, what gets celebrated, how feedback is handled, etc.)

  2. Small groups: choose 3 of these moments — for each, discuss:

    • What does good leadership look like here?

    • What might undermine change?

    • What simple action can I take to lead well in this moment?

  3. Each group shares one action idea back.

  4. Facilitator close: tie back to Change on a Page — this is how we lead change: by showing up, shaping moments, and building belief one interaction at a time.
